Kite Shadow

I hear

your laughter in water

that giggles while you rinse.

I ponder

your big ideas

those daily chair parades.

I cheer

your capture of a tickle monster

whose ten toes go bumpity bump.

I champion

your sense of fair

though her room is rectangle, yours a square.

I taste

your imagination

in devilled eggs’  yellow icing.

I tend

your ear confection.

I share

your ice cream on a pine cone.

I watch

you do things by accident

big and little mis-snakes.

I see

your tears dry in wind

that blows boo-boos bye-bye.

I match

your smile as we hunt lost shoes

those sneaky little tricksters.

I comb

your shoelaces and their hairs

catching all the mulch.

I tuck

your shrieks into the breeze

you sprint across the lawn.

I look

up high

close my eyes.

You wrap

me

in your

kite shadow.

  1. What a tender and true poem; it makes me miss those days.I love the new (and sensible) words kids make (like missnakes!). My daughter always used to say “yesternight.” Thanks for posting this. What a treat today!
